Changing Energy Habits -
Hoo Left the Lights On

In Integrated Systems Design, my team of interdisciplinary engineers and I created a system to influence user energy habits by reporting the amount and duration of time an individual left the lights on in a vacant room.  Infared sensors wirelessly send height data to a central processor, which determines the user given a person's distinct distribution of heights based on different speeds.  The user can then view a comparison of their energy use against their household members.

Self-
Monitoring
Greenhouse

In an Introduction to Electro-Mechanical Systems, I was on a team of interdisciplinary engineers tasked with building a greenhouse that self-regulates its internal temperature.  Utilizing an Arduino microcontroller for the algorithm and a second order model of the thermodynamics, my teammates and I linked our program's control input with the temperature sensors and sent this data to an offsite MySQL database.  I managed the database's structure and connected it to a dynamic HTML webpage through PHP, for users to remotely control the set point of the greenhouse.

Mechanical and Electrical Systems

Samples of projects are provided below focusing on interdisciplinary, physical systems. Three note-worthy projects are Hoo Left the Lights On, a Semi-Autonomous Quadcopter, and a Self-Monitoring Greenhouse, detailed below.
Semi-
Autonomous Quadcopter

In Mechatronics, I constructed a quadcopter with a team of interdisciplinary engineers, which has the capability of self-correcting it's position based on multiple sensory inputs.  The propellers are controlled with the Propeller microcontroller and implements PID control with a Kalman filter for accurate measurements.

WHO AM I?

I am a Cognitive Systems Engineer, which offers a unique perspective on resilient design and the user-centered experience. I focus on understanding people as they do real work and are assisted by technology. Using my experience, I could drive new innovations and direction toward fulfilling explicit and implicit user needs.

WHAT DO I DO?

I have been working on several research projects across multiple domains including: data analytics with hospital patient data to create next-gen alarm visualizations; resilient accident investigation for companies with business-critical digital infrastructure; and app development for collaborative decision-making in healthcare.
